What's “WhatsArt”? “WhatsArt” came from combining a favorite expression used when you cannot quite recall or explain someone or something and art. This seems to be the condition many people, even those interested in visual art, find themselves in today. So…
“WhatsArt” hopes to name, explain, and reveal the “Whats” of visual art by sharing serious-minded news, analysis, and reviews of current visual art happenings.
I welcome others to join the forum by emailing their writings to carol@taylor-kearneyarts.com.
As the curator of this blog, I will select timely articles to share.

The Ins and Outs of an Escapes Artist
Escapes… something to delve into like a flight of fancy or a vacation. Escapes…something to get away from like an uncomfortably close encounter. Escapes… a vehicle like a stairway or ladder for exiting – sometimes used for an emergency and sometimes as a place of respite on a hot summer day. Or – Escapes … the title and theme of the artworks and for the new exhibit as a whole by Roni Sherman Ramos at Atlantic Gallery. Roni Sherman Ramos: Escapes introduces us to a large nu

Mystique or Romantic at Cerulean Arts
I noticed that Cerulean Collective has started to place the Artist Statement on the back of the List of Works for each of the artists exhibiting in the Collective Galleries. This is much appreciated as it provides a perspective for viewing the art work-- something about each artist, possibly their process or their history, in their own words. Which is especially nice as a visitor to these venues. I cannot always make it when the artist is present. In a similar spirit, I am

Sidling In To Side Street
Always on the look out for unique art experiences, I followed a Face Book “open studio” notice for painters Trip Denton and Harvey Weinreich on Sunday, Nov 4, on Chestnut Street in the city. What made this notice different was their invitation to bring art work and share conversation. I thought “salon” - artists getting together to talk art. First thing I did was call Carol. Off we went --- Trip and Harvey are both PAFA alum from the mid 70’s and have been painting for quite

“Landscapes on the edge”: Kellyann Monaghan and Sarah Roche at Cerulean Arts Galle
First, the title’s quote is from the mouths of artists Kellyann Monaghan and Sarah Roche in their Artist Talk on October 13th at Cerulean Arts Gallery. The talk was in conjunction to their exhibition of paintings and prints called “What the Water Does”. Second, I missed the actual talk but had the pleasure of viewing it on YouTube, which I will afford to you below: Third, I almost missed this exhibition but flowed in right before the end. And I am glad that I did! So if yo

It's Opening Day!
September… the start of the school year; the start of football season; the start of the exhibition calendar. Exciting opportunities all—filled with possibility and expectation. For Cerulean Arts, it is a time of celebration on two levels. One is its continuous operation. September 15th was their 12-year anniversary. The other is on the success of their new enterprise, the Cerulean Arts Collective, now entering its second season. Congratulations to Tina Rocha and Michael

The Color Of...
When I first went through the exhibition spaces of the Cerulean Arts Collective Galleries this month, I thought I would be writing about color. Fran Lightman Gibson, Jeanne O’Shell, Jack Ramsdale, Stephanie Rodgers, and Ruth Wolf are definitely artists on the side of the “Colorists”. That is artists who allow color to be a strong, even dominant, feature in their artwork. But there is more to each artist than just their chroma. At the doorway into Fran Gibson Lightman’s spac

Mashiul Chowdhury Investigates the City
Mashiul Chowdhury has shown his art work at Cerulean Arts and other venues throughout Philadelphia for some years. Presently, he is having his first solo exhibition at Cerulean Arts Gallery and Studio from March 28th – April 21st. Called “Urban Perceptions” the exhibition of small size but powerful scaled works can not rightly be called landscape nor cityscape. “Perceptions” is exactly the word for these paintings as they seem to both record structures in the city and reco

Springing into Spring at the Cerulean Collective
As I sit here watching the snow falling outside my window, I think back to visiting Cerulean Arts this past Sunday when it seemed that Spring was finally on its way. What a reminder that weather can change. This is rather like going through the spaces at the Cerulean Arts Collective exhibitions where each artist presents powerful works of distinctive character that change the “weather” of each room. The climes, in this case, are Liz Price, Cathleen Cohen, Denise Sedor, Mic

Starting the Year at Cerulean Arts
I am disappointed—disappointed in myself that is. I usually attend the openings for the Cerulean Arts Collective, but due to scheduling conflicts, was unable to attend the opening for the January 27 through February 24th Collective Exhibition. I cherish these events because it allows me to meet the artists and talk to them about their passions and their process and everything in between. Seeing this work really brings home what I missed. These would have been some very in

Catching Up with Cerulean Arts Collective
Cerulean Arts began as a gallery for fine art and crafts and studio for art education. Painted the signature blue of its name, Cerulean has been a pop of color and culture on Ridge Avenue, along with its neighbor The Divine Lorraine, since 2006. Recently, Cerulean has expanded into the building next door and expanded its programming as well through the Cerulean Arts Collective. (Disclosure: I am a member of the Collective.) Every four weeks the gallery hosts a special, cu
